Therefore, the Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra states: "The sin of divisive speech also causes sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of retributions: first, obtaining an evil retinue; second, obtaining a discordant retinue. Why does divisive speech lead to falling into the hells? Because divisive speech separates those who are dear and close; due to the suffering of separation from the beloved, one receives the suffering of the hells. Why does divisive speech lead to emerging as an animal? Because inciting conflict through divisive speech is like the behavior of a jackal; one receives an animal body. Why does divisive speech further lead to becoming a hungry ghost? Because divisive speech also stems from stinginess and jealousy; through the sin of stinginess and jealousy, one further becomes a hungry ghost. Why, through divisive speech, does one obtain an evil retinue as a human? Because divisive speech caused one's companions all to produce evil. Why does divisive speech lead to obtaining a discordant retinue? Because divisive speech separated people who were close and fond of each other, making them discordant. One should know that divisive speech is the fifth great suffering."
