Furthermore, the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra says: "If there is a person who delights in drinking wine, this person in the present life will frequently lose wealth and property, have many physical and mental illnesses, constantly delight in quarreling, have evil reputation spread far and wide, lose wisdom, have a mind devoid of shame and conscience, acquire poor bodily complexion and strength, constantly be rebuked by all, be disliked by people, and be unable to cultivate goodness. This is called the evil retribution of drinking wine in the present life. After shedding this body, they will abide in the hells, enduring immeasurable suffering and distress such as hunger and thirst. This is called the fruit of evil karma in a future life. If they obtain a human body, their mind will constantly be deranged and distracted, unable to focus thought and contemplate wholesome dharmas. Due to the power of this single evil cause and condition, all external material necessities of life will completely rot away."
