If a person creates karma with body, speech, and mind, / Having created it, they enter the evil destinies. / Thus they shall be born in the Reviving Hell, / A most frightful place where the hair stands on end. / Having passed through countless thousands of koṭis of years, / Having died, after an instant they revive once more. / Foes and enemies each retaliate against one another; / Because of this, sentient beings slaughter one another in turn. / If one gives rise to an evil mind toward parents, / Or toward the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and the assembly of śrāvakas, / These all fall into the Black Rope Hell, / Where the suffering experienced is extremely severe and blazing. / Teaching others wholesome conduct to make them crooked, / Seeing others possess goodness and unfailingly destroying it; / These also fall into the Black Rope Hell, / As do those of double tongue, harsh speech, and much falsehood. / Delighting in committing the three kinds of heavy evil karma, / And failing to cultivate the shoots of the three wholesome roots, / Such foolish people must surely enter / The Crushing Great Hell to suffer pain for a long time. / Or slaughtering sheep, horses, and various cattle, / Diverse assorted beasts, chickens, pigs, and the like, / And killing various other insects and ants; / That person shall fall into the Crushing Hell. / There are many kinds of terrifying appearances in the world; / Using these to harass and torment sentient beings, / One shall fall into the Hell of Grinding Mountains, / Suffering the agony of being pushed, crushed, and pounded. / Because of the defilements of toxic craving and folly, / Perverting the correct principle to make it aberrant, / Judging right as wrong and contravening the laws, / They are wounded by the wheels of swords. / Relying on superior force to rob others, / Taking everything from the strong and the weak alike; / If one causes such afflictions, / One shall be trampled by iron elephants. / If one delights in slaughtering sentient beings, / Body and hands smeared with blood, mind harsh and vicious, / Constantly practicing such impure karma, / They shall be born in the Screaming Place. / Because of tormenting sentient beings in various ways, / In the Screaming Hell they are boiled and burned. / Within it there is also the Great Screaming [Hell]; / This is due to a deceitful, crooked, and treacherous mind, / Obscured by the dense forest of various views, / Sunken in the dense web of craving. / Constantly practicing such lowest karma, / They then fall into the Great Screaming [Hell]. / If one arrives at such a Great Screaming Hell, / A blazing iron city, a place where the hair stands on end, / The iron halls and iron houses within it / Thoroughly burn all who enter. / If one carries out various worldly affairs / Ever extensively troubling sentient beings, / They shall be born in the Place of Scorching, / Experiencing scorching agony for an immeasurable time. / The śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas of the world, / Parents, elders, and the aged: / If one constantly torments them and makes them displeased, / They all fall into the Scorching Hell. / Taking no joy in cultivating pure karma to be born in heaven, / Ever alienating their cherished and closest kin; / Those who rejoice in doing such things, / That person shall enter the Scorching Hell. / Malicious toward śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, / As well as virtuous people, parents, and the like, / Or furthermore harming other venerables; / They fall into the Scorching Hell, constantly ablaze. / Constantly and abundantly creating various evil karmas, / Never once giving rise to a single wholesome thought; / Such a person goes straight to the Avīci Hell, / Destined to suffer immeasurable afflictions. / If one declares the correct Dharma to be non-Dharma, / And declares various non-Dharmas to be the correct Dharma, / Since there is no increase in wholesome deeds, / That person shall enter the Avīci Hell. / The Reviving and Black Rope—these two hells, / With Crushing, Screaming, and so on making five; / Scorching and Great Scorching together make seven, / And the Avīci Hell is the eighth. / These eight are called the Great Hells, / Fiercely blazing, acutely painful, and hard to endure. / Because of what evil-karma people have committed, / Among them there are sixteen minor hells.
