“Then King Yama reproached him a second time, saying, ‘Did you people not see the second divine messenger appear in the world?’ He answers, ‘Great Deva, truly I did not see him.’ The king tells him again, ‘Did you not see, formerly when in the world with a human body, whether a woman’s body or a man’s body, the harmony of the four great elements suddenly disrupted and invaded by the suffering of illness, chronically bedridden and critically ill, or lying on a bed small or large, stained with feces and urine, tossing and turning in it unable to help oneself, lying down, sleeping, rising, and sitting all depending on people to support and attend, washing, wiping, holding, and carrying, giving drink and giving food, all requiring other people? Did you see this or not?’ That person answers, ‘Great Deva, truly I saw it.’ The king tells him again, ‘Foolish person, seeing such, why did you not reflect: “I now also have such a nature, not yet freed from the nature of afflicted conditions; I ought to perform wholesome karma so that in the future, throughout the long night, I may attain great benefit, great peace, and happiness”? That person answers, ‘No, truly I did not reflect thus, because with a lazy mind I acted with heedlessness.’ The king says, ‘Foolish person, since you were lazy and indolent and did not perform wholesome karma, you receive this evil retribution. It was not created by another; you yourself return to receive the retribution.’”
