“Then King Yama reproached him a third time, saying to him, ‘You foolish person, when you were formerly a human, could you not have seen the third divine messenger appear in the world?’ He answers, ‘Great Deva, truly I did not see him.’ The king tells him again, ‘When you were in the human world, could you not have seen, whether a woman’s body or a man’s body, when life ended in due course, placed upon a bed, covered over with clothes of mixed colors, carried out of the settlement, mounted with curtains, carriages, and canopies, adorned in various ways, surrounded by kinsmen, raising their hands and disheveling their hair, scattering ashes and dirt over their heads in extreme grief and distress, wailing, weeping, and shouting loudly, beating their breasts in sorrow, choking with bitter sobs and intense distress? Did you see all of this or not?’ He answers, ‘Great Deva, truly I saw it.’ Then the king tells him, ‘Foolish person, in former times, having seen such, why did you not reflect: “I too am subject to death and have not managed to escape it; I ought now to perform good deeds so that throughout the long night I may attain great benefit”? That person answers, ‘Great Deva, truly I did not reflect thus. Why is that? Because of heedlessness.’ Then the king tells him, ‘Since you were heedless and did not perform wholesome karma, you made this evil yourself; it was not made by another. Having obtained this retribution, you yourself return to receive it.’ Having instructed, admonished, and reproached him with these three messengers, [the king] ordered that he be taken away. At that time, the wardens of hell seized the wrongdoer by both feet and both arms, with his head downward and feet upward, and hurled him far away into the various hells.”
