As the Ekottarika-āgama states: At that time, the Bhagavat told the bhikṣus: 'There are three great afflictions. What are the three? First, wind is a great affliction; second, phlegm is a great affliction; third, cold is a great affliction. Yet there are three good medicines to treat them. If one has an affliction of wind, clarified butter is a good medicine, as is food made with clarified butter. If one has an affliction of phlegm, honey is a good medicine, as is food made with honey. If one has an affliction of cold, oil is a good medicine, as is food and drink made with oil. These are called the three great afflictions, which have these three medicines to treat them. In this manner, bhikṣus, there are also three great afflictions: first, lustful desire; second, anger; third, delusion. Yet there are three good medicines to treat them: first, when lustful desire arises, one treats it with the contemplation of impurity and meditates on the path of impurity; second, for the great affliction of anger, one treats it with the teaching of loving-kindness and meditates on the path of loving-kindness; third, for the great affliction of delusion, one treats it with the teaching of wisdom and the path arising from causes and conditions. These are called the three great afflictions of bhikṣus, which have these three medicines to treat them.'
