Furthermore, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: "Prajñāpāramitā can eradicate the roots of the eighty-four thousand diseases. These eighty-four thousand all arise from four illnesses: first, greed; second, hatred; third, delusion; and fourth, an equal combination of the poisons. For each of these four illnesses, twenty-one thousand are apportioned. Through contemplation of impurity, the twenty-one thousand defilements of greedy desire are eliminated. Through contemplation of loving-kindness and compassion, the twenty-one thousand defilements of hatred are eliminated. Through contemplation of causes and conditions, the twenty-one thousand defilements of delusion are eliminated. Applying all of the above medicines together eliminates the twenty-one thousand defilements of the illness of equal combination. Just as a precious jewel can dispel darkness, prajñāpāramitā can likewise dispel the afflictions and diseases of the three poisons."
