Dwelling in ordinary status, who is free from illness? Because one has a retribution body, it is constantly afflicted with sickness. Some renounce secular life to leave home, wandering alone and sleeping in solitude; others are poor, sick, old, and weak, with no one to wait upon them. If they do not look after each other, where will their lives find refuge? Therefore, in the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, the Buddha said: 'From now on, you should look after the sick; you should become caregivers of the sick. If anyone wishes to make offerings to me, they should first make offerings to the sick.' Furthermore, if encountering sick renouncers of the fivefold assembly along the road, the Buddha instituted a rule that all of the sevenfold assembly must halt and look after them. If they abandon them without care, all incur an offense. For the mind of all Buddhas takes great compassion as its essence; to follow my words is to have the Buddha's mind.
