As the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'If one meets a sick person of the fivefold monastic assembly on the road, one should immediately seek a cart or mount to carry them, and have them provided for in accordance with the Dharma; even at the time of death, one should cremate and bury them, and must not abandon the sick person. If nine conditions are fulfilled, an untimely death will surely occur: first, knowing that food is unbeneficial yet greedily eating it; second, not knowing how to moderate portions; third, eating before earlier food is digested; fourth, forcibly vomiting out food before it is digested; fifth, forcefully holding back what should be excreted after digestion; sixth, eating food not suited to the illness; seventh, eating food suited to the illness but not moderating portions; eighth, being indolent; ninth, lacking wisdom.' (As the Bhaiṣajyaguru-sūtra also contains the nine untimely deaths, the general sense may be known from this.)
