Furthermore, the *Sarvāstivāda-vinaya* states: “There were bhikṣus who slept in the assembly. The Buddha said: ‘I permit washing the head with water.’ Still they slept and could not [stay awake]. A trustworthy bhikṣu was instructed to wash another with water using five dharmas: first, compassion; second, not disturbing the other; third, [when he is in] sleep; fourth, with his head leaning against a wall; fifth, sitting with legs stretched out. If he still did not stop sleeping, he was permitted to slap him with the hand. If he still did not stop sleeping, the Buddha permitted tossing a ball at him. If he still did not stop sleeping, the Buddha permitted using a meditation staff (chanzhang). When taking the meditation staff, one should give rise to a mind of respect, grasp the staff with both hands, and place it on top of one’s head. If, while sitting, one does not stop sleeping, one should rise, look for others who are sleeping, and prod them with the meditation staff; having prodded them, return and sit down. If there are none sleeping, return the meditation staff to its original place and sit down. If he still does not stop sleeping, the Buddha permitted using a meditation weight (chanzhen). Make it by making a hole in it, string a cord through the hole, and attach a loop to the end of the cord, hanging it above the ear, four finger-widths in front of the forehead. When wearing the meditation weight, the meditation weight falls to the ground. The Buddha said: ‘When the meditation weight falls, one should rise and walk slowly and deliberately, in the manner of a goose’s walk.’”
