Furthermore, the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra states: The Buddha told Brahmā and the others, 'My śrāvakas, present and future, whose three actions are in accord [with Dharma] and who are in accord with the three kinds of bodhi, whether trainees or beyond training, who uphold the precepts fully, are learned, perform good deeds, and deliver sentient beings from the ocean of the three realms of existence; as well as the donors who build stupas and monasteries for my śrāvakas and provide them with all necessities, together with their retinues—I entrust them to you all. Do not allow wicked kings to harass or disturb them contrary to the Dharma.' At that time, Brahmā, Śakra, the dragon kings, yakṣas, and others joined their palms toward the Buddha and spoke these words: 'Venerable Bhagavat, wherever there are stupas and monasteries of all Tathāgatas, and araṇya hermitages, and wherever in future ages laypeople or monastics build stupas and monasteries for the World-Honoured One's śrāvaka disciples, we shall together protect them all, causing them to be free from all perils and fears. Likewise, toward those donors who provide food, drink, robes, bedding, medicines, and all necessities, we shall also guard, protect, and nurture them.'
