Therefore, the Seven Buddhas Sūtra states: 'As for the guardian deities of a saṅghārāma, there are eighteen spirits: the first is named Fine Sound, the second Brahma Sound, the third Heavenly Drum, the fourth Praised as Sublime, the fifth Praised as Beautiful, the sixth Rubbing Wondrous, the seventh Fragrant Sound, the eighth Lion, the ninth Sublime Praise, the tenth Brahma Resonator, the eleventh Human Sound, the twelfth Buddha Servant, the thirteenth Praising Virtue, the fourteenth Wide Eyes, the fifteenth Wondrous Eyes, the sixteenth Penetrating Hearing, the seventeenth Penetrating Sight, and the eighteenth Universal Sight.' Since a monastery has deities protecting it, those who reside in it should also exert themselves and not be indolent, lest they incur immediate retribution.
