As the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya states: There was a bhikṣu who accepted an invitation to eat from others; he entered in silence and left in silence. The householders rebuked him, saying, "We do not know whether the food was good or not." The bhikṣus reported this to the Buddha. The Buddha said, "From now on, at mealtime, recite verses of praise and make benedictions for the donor." They did not know who should do it. The Buddha said, "The senior seat should do it. If the senior seat is unable, appoint the one next in sequence who is capable to do it." Therefore, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "The senior seat should know what kind of donation the person has made and should make the appropriate benediction for the occasion."
