As the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: There are sixteen evil disciplines. What are the sixteen? First, for the sake of profit, feeding and raising lambs and sheep, and when they are fattened, reselling them. Second, for the sake of profit, buying and slaughtering them. Third, for the sake of profit, feeding and raising swine and pigs, and when they are fattened, reselling them. Fourth, for the sake of profit, buying and slaughtering them. Fifth, for the sake of profit, feeding and raising cattle and calves, and when they are fattened, reselling them. Sixth, for the sake of profit, buying and slaughtering them. Seventh, for the sake of profit, raising chickens to fatten them, and when fattened, reselling them. Eighth, for the sake of profit, buying and slaughtering them. Ninth, angling for fish. Tenth, being a hunter. Eleventh, robbery. Twelfth, being an executioner. Thirteenth, netting flying birds. Fourteenth, double-tongued speech. Fifteenth, being a jailer. Sixteenth, enchanting nāgas. To be able, for the sake of sentient beings, to permanently sever these sixteen evil actions is called cultivating the precepts.
