As the Buddha-spoken Scripture on the Field of Merit says: The Buddha told Śakra, Lord of the Devas: 'There are further seven methods of widespread giving, named fields of merit. Practitioners who attain merit will be born in the Brahmā Heaven. What are the seven? First, erecting stūpas, saṅgha quarters, halls, and pavilions. Second, planting orchards and bathing pools with clean trees. Third, constantly giving medicine to cure all diseases. Fourth, making sturdy boats to ferry the people across. Fifth, setting up bridges to cross the weak and infirm. Sixth, making wells near roads so the thirsty can drink. Seventh, making latrines along roads to provide places for relief. These are the seven things that attain the merit of the Brahmā Heaven.'
