At that time, there was a bhikṣu in the assembly named Tingcong (Śrutavat). Hearing the Dharma with joy, he said to the Buddha: 'Recalling my own past life, I was born in the kingdom of Vārāṇasī as an elder's son. Beside a great road I erected a vihāra, supplying beds, bedding, drinks, and grain to the saṅgha; travelers who were exhausted could also rest there. Due to this merit, at the end of life I was born in heaven as Śakra, Lord of the Devas, and descended to be born in the world as a wheel-turning king, thirty-six times each, governing gods and humans for ninety-one kalpas. Hair grew beneath my feet, and I roamed treading upon empty space, naturally enjoying blessings. Now I have met the Bhagavat who looks down upon sentient beings, dispelling my folly and turbidity, and settling me in quiet wisdom; the shoots of birth and death are withered, and I am called a true person. That karmic retribution truly fulfills its promise is indeed so!'
