There was also another bhikṣu named Sudhaya, who said to the Bhagavat: "I recall in a past life being born in the country of Vaiśālī as the son of a commoner's family. At that time there was no Buddha in the world, and the saṃgha was teaching and transforming [beings]. I was carrying curds into the marketplace to sell, when I happened upon a great assembly of the saṃgha expounding the Dharma. I passed by, stood to listen, and was filled with joy upon hearing the Dharma. I immediately raised the jar of curds and offered it to the saṃgha. Receiving their blessing and dedication of merit, my delight multiplied all the more. Because of these merits, after my life ended I was born in the heavens. When reborn down in the human world, I was constantly in an exalted and noble station for ninety-one kalpas. For a remnant offense at the very end, I was reborn down in the human world; when my mother was pregnant for several months, she fell ill and died. She was buried in a tomb, and when my months were complete I was born. For seven years inside the tomb I drank the milk of my dead mother, thereby sustaining my life. Through this subtle remnant of merit I have encountered the Buddha and attained the true reality."
