There was another bhikṣu named Vakkula, who said to the Buddha: 'I recall in the past I was born in the kingdom of Kusinagara as an elder's son. At that time there was no Buddha in the world. The saṅgha taught and transformed, holding a great assembly to expound the Dharma. I went to listen to the Dharma, rejoiced upon hearing the Dharma, and took a medicinal fruit named harītakī to offer to the saṅgha. Due to this fruit's retribution, at the end of life I was born in heaven, and descending to be born in the world I was always in noble and honorable stations, surpassing the multitude. For ninety-one kalpas I never suffered from disease. With the remainder of the merit I met the Buddha and attained arhatship.'
