At that time, the Lord of the Devas arose from his seat, prostrated before the Buddha, knelt with palms joined, and said to the Buddha: "Bhagavat, I reflect upon my former lifetimes: I was born in the great country of Kuru as the son of an elder. A servant carried me in his arms as we entered the city for sightseeing, and we chanced upon the monks begging for alms along the streets and lanes. Seeing that the people making offerings were very numerous, I thought to myself: 'If only I could obtain treasures to give as offerings to the monks—would that not be delightful!' I immediately unfastened my pearl necklace and offered it to the saṃgha. With united minds they offered a blessing, and I departed in joy. Through this cause and condition, when my life ended I was born in heaven and became the Lord of the Devas, forever free from the eight adverse conditions for ninety-one kalpas."
