The Buddha told the Lord of the Devas and the great assembly: "Listen as I relate my own deeds in past lives. Formerly, in a past life of mine in the country of Vārāṇasī, I constructed a latrine beside a major road. Among the people of the country, there were none who obtained ease and relief who were not deeply grateful for the benevolence. By virtue of this merit, I have been pure life after life; practicing the Way through accumulated kalpas, defilements could not taint me, I have been radiant with a golden color, dust and grime have not adhered to me, and food has digested naturally without the distress of bowel movements and urination."
