As the Shijialuoyue liu xiang bai jing (Siṅgālovāda-sūtra) says: 'There are four classes of bad spiritual friends: first, harboring an antagonistic mind internally, but forcefully pretending to be a spiritual friend externally; second, using fine words before a person, but speaking evil of the person behind their back; third, when an emergency arises, showing grief before the person, but rejoicing behind their back; fourth, appearing close and affectionate externally, but hatching antagonistic plots internally. There are another four classes of bad spiritual friends: first, flying into a great rage over a slight infringement; second, refusing to go when asked to run an errand; third, seeing that a person has an emergency, running away to avoid them; fourth, seeing a person die, casting them aside without looking after them.'
