The appraisal states: In the Western Regions, Kāśyapa wore rag robes to supervise the assembly; in the Northern Qi, Chief Controller Shang wore cotton clothing to preside over his office. If one esteems spiritual disposition, the ordinary and foolish will not hold him in awe; if one possesses great wealth, the jealous and malicious will conspire against him. How could monastic officials be entirely without stipends? Yet should they accumulate excessively, bandits will resent them and the populace will loathe them; "carrying a load upon one's back while riding in a carriage and concealing a jade disc" brings immediate harm to oneself and also damages the gate of the Dharma. The Master said: "Rather than being extravagant, it is better to be frugal." It is fitting to win people's joyful submission through virtue and the Way, and that is sufficient.
