The Daweide tuoluoni jing states: "Because they wander confused in cyclic existence and abide in improper paths, they are called ordinary beings (pṛthagjana). In Sanskrit, it is called bāla; in the language of Sui, it is called 'the path of hair', meaning that their mental actions are unsettled, just like light hair blown east and west with the wind. Furthermore, there are two kinds: first, infant-like ordinary beings, meaning those lacking wisdom; second, foolish and blind ordinary beings, who are stubborn, obtuse, and incapable of being taught." The Foxing lun states: "Ordinary beings have the view of selfhood as their nature."
