This first gained its name from Master Kumārajīva. Previously, from the Han abandonment of Chang'an until the rise of the Qin, more than three hundred years had passed, and the court and marketplace were desolate. Although there were several saṅghārāmas, few people took refuge in them. In the era of Yao Xing, Kumārajīva (translated as 'Youth of Long Life') constructed a hall in the Great Monastery and thatched it with straw, within which he translated sūtras; hence it was named after this.
