The Shiming says: "'Fang' (cell) means 'pang' (side). It is because they are on both sides of the hall." ○ The Five-Part Vinaya states that the monk Pobi requested and petitioned to allow monks to receive donations of dwelling quarters, and the Buddha thereupon granted permission. ○ The Ten-Recitation Vinaya states: "Cells either belong to the Saṃgha (like the meditation dormitories and huts nowadays) or belong to a single person (like the respective abbots/residents within monasteries nowadays)." The Sarvāstivāda-śāstra states: "If a cell is newly completed and there is a newly ordained monk of pure moral virtue who enters into this cell, once he has done so, the donor's faithful intention in donating is fulfilled. If one erects all manner of dwelling quarters that are adorned, high, and broad, and supposing there is a monk of pure precepts who uses them even temporarily, once he has done so, the gift's debt of gratitude is repaid, because moral precepts are not worldly phenomena."
