Kumārajīva says: "Leaving the household generally has three dharmas: 1. Upholding the precepts; 2. Meditative concentration; 3. Wisdom. Upholding the precepts can subdue afflictions and make their strength faint. Meditative concentration can block afflictions, like a flanking mountain damming a stream. Wisdom can eradicate afflictions, completely without remainder." ○ Master Dao'an's Preface to the Great Prātimokṣa says: "The teachings established by the World-Honoured One are three: the first is the moral precepts (vinaya); the second is meditative concentration; the third is wisdom. These three are the doorways to the supreme Path, the crucial passes to nirvāṇa. Precepts are the Ganjiang sword that severs the three evil destinies; concentration is the sharp blade that cuts off distraction; wisdom is the wondrous physician who balances medicine and disease."
