The Śuka Sūtra says: The brāhmaṇa Śuka addressed the Buddha, saying, 'Can a white-robed householder cultivate merit and roots of goodness superior to those of a monastic?' The Buddha said, 'In this matter, I do not give a definitive answer. If among monastics there are some who do not cultivate roots of goodness, they are inferior to householders. If among householders there are those who can cultivate roots of goodness, they are superior to monastics.' (This refers to being superior to those monastics who do not cultivate roots of goodness and defile the Path.)
