The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: To one newly desiring to undergo pravrajyā, one must not immediately speak of pleasant matters. One should speak of eating one meal and staying in one place, taking little food and little drink, much wakefulness and little sleep. One should ask him, saying, 'Are you capable of this or not?' Only when he answers, 'I am capable,' may one accept him.
