The Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra states: When the Buddha was before the Tathāgata Ratnagarbha, he made a vow that upon attaining buddhahood, the kāṣāya would possess five kinds of merit: 1. If one enters my Dharma and commits grave offenses or holds wrong views, yet in a single thought-moment reveres and respects it with a faithful mind, they are certain to receive a prediction of enlightenment in the three vehicles; 2. if devas, nāgas, humans, or ghosts can revere even a small portion of this kāṣāya, they will attain non-retrogression in the three vehicles; 3. if spirits, ghosts, or humans obtain even four inches of the kāṣāya, their food and drink will be fully sufficient; 4. if sentient beings are in mutual conflict, by being mindful of the power of the kāṣāya, they will immediately give rise to compassion; 5. if one holds even a small portion of it and shows reverence and respect, one will always prevail over others.
