The sūtra says: 'The kāṣāya is an emblem of the noble ones, conforming to the practice of extinction, a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and what should be worn by those free from desire. Therefore, when those who have gone forth wear the kāṣāya on their bodies, if they have not yet attained the fruits of the śramaṇa, they should revere it with eight dharmas. What are the eight dharmas? One should give rise to the notion of a stūpa, the notion of extinction, the notion of loving-kindness and compassion, the notion of the Buddha, the notion of shame and remorse, [the notion of] causing oneself in future lives to be free from greed, hatred, and delusion, and fully possessing the notion of a śramaṇa.'
