This means turning the outer side inward and exchanging the front for the back. Northern monks mostly do this. ○ The Mahīśāsaka-vinaya states: 'The Buddha said: If leaving or entering a village, grass and trees snag and tear the robe, or wind and dust dirty it and enter the strips (strips refers to the pattern of the robe), and fearing that sunlight will fade the robe's color, for the purpose of protecting the robe, I permit wearing the kāṣāya reversed outside a village. If the robe is easily ruined, I permit wearing the robe upside down, attaching hooks and loops at top and bottom.'
