The Upāsakaśīla-sūtra states: 'The fruits of the precepts are two: first, celestial joy; second, bodhi joy. The wise should seek bodhi and not seek celestial joy.' The Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra states: 'If one who holds the precepts contemplates celestial joy in mind, this person defiles the pure precepts like water mixed with poison. Because celestial joy is impermanent, when life ends one inevitably falls back and must undergo great suffering; therefore one must seek nirvāṇa.'
