A non-Buddhist disciple, Śrīgupta, was the brother-in-law of the elder Jyotiṣka. He mixed poison into food and invited the Buddha and the Saṃgha to a meal. The Buddha knew this and still accepted it. The Buddha said to the great assembly: 'Wait until the saṃbha is chanted, and only then may you eat.' Because of this, the various poisons in the end caused no harm. / The Fanmonan guowang jing says: 'All those who wish to give food should make it equal, regardless of high or low.' Thereupon the Buddha ordered Ānanda to chant the saṃbha at mealtime. Saṃbha means that the food for the Saṃgha is all equal. / The Jigui zhuan says: Saṃprakhyāta; formerly called saṃbha, which is erroneous.
