The *Sūtra of the Inquiries of the Deva Supratiṣṭhitamati* says: The deva asked Mañjuśrī: "What kind of bhikṣu obtains the name 'Chan master'?" Mañjuśrī said: "Regarding all dharmas, one single practice of contemplation, namely non-arising. If one knows thus, one obtains the name 'Chan master.' Even unto having not the slightest dharma that can be grasped. What dharmas are not grasped? That is to say, not grasping this world or future worlds, not grasping the three realms, up to not grasping all dharmas whatsoever, meaning that all dharmas are utterly non-existent. When a sentient being does not grasp in this way, he obtains the name 'Chan master.' With no slight grasping, non-grasping, or grasping, because nothing whatsoever is obtained among all dharmas, there is no recollection. If there is no recollection, one does not cultivate; if one does not cultivate, one does not realize—hence he is named a Chan master."
