The Vinaya says: "There was an elder whose family had worked in oil-pressing for generations. He invited the monk Shanfa to a meal. Being slightly dissatisfied, [the monk] dropped a hint, saying: 'The taste of the food is very good, only the sesame dregs are lacking.' Having touched upon what was taboo, the elder was displeased. The Buddha thereupon formulated a precept." (Whenever attending an invitation, one must first inquire about what is taboo in the host's household.) The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya says: "At the house offering a meal, take care not to laugh loudly, talk together in whispers, or rashly converse on worldly matters." The Fayuan [zhulin] says: "Nowadays one sees monks at the banquets of households in mourning laughing and talking freely, conversing on worldly affairs; this is truly ridiculed by the vulgar, and humane persons should avoid it."
