The Mūlasarvāstivāda-ekottarakarma-śataka states: The Buddha said, "One must not pay homage to a stained bhikṣu, nor must a stained bhikṣu pay homage to others. One who violates this commits an offense of transgression of the Dharma." Upāli addressed the Buddha, "What is called 'stained'?" The Buddha said, "There are two kinds of stain: first, stain from impurity; second, stain from food and drink. Regarding stain from food and drink: if one has eaten and not yet rinsed one's mouth, or even if one has rinsed and brushed, there remains lingering saliva and grease, this is called 'stained.' If mutual paying of homage incurs fault, then after eating one must rinse and brush the mouth and teeth."
