The Vinaya says: 'First, speak softly upon entering the gate; second, restrain body, speech, and mind; third, bow humbly; fourth, guard the sense faculties well; fifth, maintain dignified and orderly deportment, causing people to give rise to goodness.' A verse in the Kuśalamūlasaṃparigraha Sūtra says: 'A monk entering another's house / Should not harbor pride, / Self-aggrandizement, or a haughty mind; / If any arise, all must be eliminated. / With a mind of compassion, / Free from desire and seeking nothing, / He should preach the Dharma to bring broad benefit, / And practice purely in the world.'
