The Daśabhāṇavāra says: 'Instruct one another on good and evil, offering mutual confession based on the three expressions' (the three expressions mean seeing, hearing, and suspecting). The Chao states: 'Within the ninety days, people mostly delude themselves and do not see their own errors. In principle, one should rely on the pure assembly to bestow compassion, guidance, and instruction; to confess one's own transgressions freely and allow the Sangha to point out one's faults. Internally, it reveals that nothing is hidden privately; externally, it shows whether there are flaws. Entrusting one's body and speech to others, it is therefore called pravāraṇā (giving free rein).'
