瘂者(鵶賈反考聲云不能言也案瘂人雖有聲而無詞說文闕古今正字瘂瘖也從疒亞聲經從口作啞非也音厄笑聲也非經義鵶音烏加反疒音女厄反)。

The mute (瘂者: the first character is pronounced *ya* + *gu* in fanqie. The *Kaosheng* states: “Unable to speak.” Examining the mute: though they have vocal sound, they have no speech. The *Shuowen jiezi* omits it. The *Gu-jin zhengzi* states: “*Yǎ* means mute; it is composed of the radical *chuáng* (illness) with *yà* as phonetic.” In the sūtra it is written with the mouth radical as 啞, which is incorrect; that is pronounced *e*, denoting the sound of laughter, and is not the meaning intended by the sūtra. *Yā* is pronounced *wu* + *jia* in fanqie; *chuáng* (疒) is pronounced *nü* + *e* in fanqie).
