Mount Sumeru (蘇迷盧山: in Sanskrit, the name of the jewel mountain. Some call it Mount Xumi [須彌山], and some call it Mount Milou [彌樓山]; these are all corrupt Sanskrit pronunciations and incorrect. The correct Sanskrit sound is *sumeru* (蘇迷嚧), where the character *lu* (嚧) is rolled with the tongue. In the Tang language, it is “Wonderfully High Mountain” (妙高山). The *Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya* states: “It is formed of four jewels: the eastern face is white silver, the northern face is yellow gold, the western face is crystal, and the southern face is lapis lazuli.” The *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* states: “Formed of four jewels, it is called ‘wonderful’; surpassing all mountains, it is called ‘high’.” It is also named “Mountain of Wonderful Light” (妙光山), because the radiance of the four-colored jewels differs individually and illuminates the world, hence it is named Wonderful Light).
