北俱盧洲(古名鬱單越或名鬱怛囉或云欝多羅拘樓或名郁多羅鳩留皆梵語輕重不同也正梵音云嗢怛羅矩嚕此譯為高勝阿毘曇論云地方高大定壽千歲無諸苦常受樂勝餘洲故名高勝嗢音烏骨反嚕音魯字轉舌)。

Uttarakuru, the northern continent (北俱盧洲: anciently named *Yudanyue* [鬱單越], *Yudaluo* [鬱怛囉], *Yutuoluojulou* [欝多羅拘樓], or *Yutuoliaojiuliu* [郁多羅鳩留], all of which are variations of light and heavy syllables in Sanskrit. The correct Sanskrit sound is *uttarakuru* (嗢怛羅矩嚕), translated here as “Lofty and Superior”. The *Abhidharma-śāstra* states: “Its land is lofty and vast; the lifespan is fixed at one thousand years; they are free from all suffering and constantly experience joy, surpassing the other continents; hence it is named Lofty and Superior.” *Wà* (嗢) is pronounced *wu* + *gu* in fanqie; *rū* (嚕) is pronounced *lu* with the tongue rolled).
