Listening and proceeding (聽往: the first character is pronounced *ti* + *ying* in fanqie. The *Kaosheng* states: “To scrutinize sound with the ear; also to permit; to believe.” The *Shuowen jiezi* states: “To hear; it is composed of the radicals *dé* (virtue) and *ěr* (ear) with *rén* as phonetic.” *Líng* (聆) is pronounced *ling*; *dé* (德) is pronounced *de*; *rén* (壬) is pronounced *ti* + *ying* in fanqie).
