Purulent and putrid (膿爛: the first character is pronounced *nu* + *hong* in fanqie. The *Gu-jin zhengzi* states: “Carbuncles and ulcers discharging bloody pus.” The *Shuowen jiezi* states: “Swollen blood; it is composed of the radical *ròu* (meat) with *nóng* as phonetic.” The second character is pronounced *lan* + *tan* in fanqie. The *Fangyan* states: “Cooked thoroughly by fire.” The *Shuowen jiezi* states: “Composed of the radical *huǒ* (fire) with *lán* as phonetic.”)
