鞭撻（上必綿反顧野王曰用革以扑罪人謂之鞭字書云撾馬杖也說文從革便聲也下他遏反考聲撻亦鞭也形聲字）。

鞭撻 (The first character has the fanqie bi + mian [biān]. Gu Yewang says: 'Using leather to strike criminals is called biān.' The Zishu says: 'A stick for flogging horses.' The Shuowen says it is derived from gé [革, leather] with biàn [便] phonetic. The second character has the fanqie ta + e [tà]. The Kaosheng says: 'Tà also means to whip.' It is a phono-semantic character).
