城塹（僉焰反顧謂城池為壍顧野王云今城外壕坈也字書云城隍也說文坈也從土斬聲或從漸作壍同）。

City moat (城塹: *qi[ān]-y[àn]*. Gu refers to city walls and moats as 壍. Gu Yewang says: "Now the trench and pit outside a city wall." The character dictionaries say: "A city moat." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "A pit; composed of 土 with 斬 phonetic." Sometimes written with 漸 as 壍; both are identical).
