矛盾（上莫侯反鄭注禮記云酋矛也說文長二丈建於兵車象形字書並無下述尹反鄭注周禮云五盾干櫓之屬其名未盡聞方言云自關而東或謂之干關西謂之盾說文瞂也從厂從十從目象形字也瞂音伐今經從木作楯非也乃是欄檻非此鉾楯兩字並錯用皆非正字）。

Spears and shields (矛盾: the first is *m[ò]-h[óu]*. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the *Book of Rites* says: "A *qiu* spear." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "Twenty feet long, mounted on war chariots; a pictograph; not found in character dictionaries." The second is *sh[ù]-y[ǐn]*. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the *Rites of Zhou* says: "The five kinds of shields belong to bucklers and mantlets, whose specific names have not all been heard." The *Fangyan* says: "East of the Pass it is called *gan*; west of the Pass it is called *dun*." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "A buckler; composed of 厂, 十, and 目; a pictograph; 瞂 is pronounced *fá*." In the present sūtra it is written with 木 as 楯, which is incorrect, as that denotes a railing. Neither 鉾 nor 楯 is properly used here; neither is the standard graph).
