“Mahākāla” (摩訶迦羅: Sanskrit. In the Tang language, it means ‘Great Black Deva’ (Daheitian Shen). He possesses great supernatural power and a lifespan of immeasurable thousands of years. He has eight arms, and his body has the color of dark, bluish-black clouds. Two hands horizontally hold a trident before his chest. The second right hand grasps a blue-black ram. The second left hand grasps the hair-topknot of a hungry ghost. The third right hand holds a sword. The third left hand holds a khaṭvāṅga—which is Sanskrit for a skull-topped staff. The remaining two rear hands each stretch a white elephant hide across his shoulders, draped over him as a cloak. Poisonous serpents are threaded through human skulls to serve as his necklace. Tiger fangs project upward, assuming a terrifying wrathful form. Lightning, thunder, smoke, and fire form his majestic aura. His body is exceedingly huge. Beneath his feet, an earth-goddess deva supports his feet with both hands).
