Pestle and mortar (碓臼: the upper character has the fanqie duī + huì [duì]; the lower has the pronunciation jiù. Gu Yewang says: 'A duì is that which is used to pound [grain].' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Formed from 石 (stone) with 隹 phonetic. A jiù is also for pounding grain. In ancient times, holes were dug in the earth to serve as mortars; later, wood or stone was hollowed out to make them; the dots in the middle are pictographic').
