Ravines and mountain streams: the upper character has the fanqie *qi* + *xi*. The *Guangya* states: '谿 (*xi*) means a valley.' The *Shuowen* states: 'Water pouring into streams.' It has the valley radical (谷) and 奚 as its phonetic component. It is also written as 溪. The lower character has the fanqie *jian* + *yan*. Mao's commentary on the *Shijing* states: 'Water flowing through mountain gorges is called 澗 (*jian*).' The *Shangshu* states: 'The Yi, Luo, Chan, and Jian rivers, having entered the Yellow River.' Kong Anguo states: 'The Jian River issues from the northern mountains of Mianchi.' In my view, waters in narrow mountain gorges everywhere are called *jian*. The *Shuowen* also states: 'Mountain streams.' It has the water radical (水) and 間 as its phonetic component.
