Beating and striking: the upper character has the fanqie *jia* + *rui*. Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the *Huainanzi* states: '捶 (*chui*) means to forge,' pronounced *dou* + *luan*. The *Kaosheng* says: 'A stake,' pronounced *chao* + *e*. The *Shuowen* states: '捶 means to strike with a staff.' It has the hand radical (手) and 垂 as its phonetic component. It is also written with the wood radical as 棰; a 棰 is a club. The lower character has the fanqie *de* + *leng*. The *Guangya* states: '打 (*da*) means to strike.' The *Picang* states: '打 means to beat with a club.' It has the hand radical (手) and 丁 as its phonetic component. Nowadays, south of the Yangtze River in the Wu region, it is seen pronounced as *ding*, which is not adopted here.
